MANAGERS AND AGENCIES: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?
In the past years that CBS Models have been operating, the company has helped hundreds of aspiring
models become successful in their career in modelling. Most of them have been sent to the different
parts of the world, dominating the runway. This has become a great testament the company is indeed a
strong brand.
Most of the new and aspiring models are still in a path where they are sorting things out, discovering
what lies for them in the industry. Surely, they need help from experts. But the most common question
that models often ask is: Should I get an Agency or a Manager?
Aside from helping models in terms of exposure, agency representation helps weed out the bad
elements so most of the time you are only dealing with legit photographers, art directors, crews, etc.
and are getting the best pay.
But what about the managers? There are modelling newbies and established models who may be
wondering if they need to have a manager and what exactly a manager does.
We can safely tell you that most of the models need not have a manager. If you already have an existing
agency, they already are considered as your manager. If you are doing freelance modelling or don't have
agency representation, then a manager might probably help you but it is not going to make or break you
to not have one.
Managers are likely associated with acting or those in field of entertainment, such as performers on
stage or television. In the field of entertainment, managers serve as your go-to person for guidance,
networking, client engagement, legal and other administrative tasks such as contracts management, etc.
There are different kinds of managers serving different purposes: personal, business and road managers.
Unlike modeling agencies, managers usually do not get hold of a huge roster of numbers. They tend
to improve and nurture close-working relations with a small group of talent (musicians, entertainers,
actors, etc.). Managers help with guidance and career-path alignment, just like the agencies to their
models.
So a model technically would not require a manager. An agency such as CBS Models already takes care
of doing all of the tasks just like how the manager do, probably more than that of a manager. So do not
ever feel that you need to have both. It is, in a way, a waste of time, especially since managers operate using
contracts as modeling agencies do and it will not serve its rightful purpose and might lead to some
conflicts with the contract.
Having an agent is more than enough for a model to have. They are also like managers so models should
not feel like they are missing out by not having a manager. It is because agencies like CBS Models also
work as managers and many agencies have the word Management in their brand name.
